What Driving Licence Do You Need to Drive a Motorhome in the UK?

Motorhome driving license ukIf you’re thinking about buying a motorhome, one of the first questions you’ll likely ask is whether your current driving licence actually lets you drive one. It’s a question that catches a lot of people out, and the answer isn’t always as straightforward as you might expect.

The good news is that the majority of motorhomes on the UK market can be driven on a standard car licence. But there are some important weight thresholds to understand before you start shopping, and getting this wrong can have serious consequences for both your safety and your insurance.

Here’s everything you need to know about motorhome driving licences in the UK.

It All Comes Down to Weight

The key factor when it comes to motorhome licensing is the vehicle’s Maximum Authorised Mass, or MAM. This is the maximum permitted weight of the motorhome when fully loaded, including passengers, fuel, water, luggage and any equipment on board. You’ll find the MAM figure in the vehicle’s handbook and on the V5C registration document.

The licence category you need is determined entirely by this figure, so it’s worth knowing before you fall in love with a particular model.

Category B: Your Standard Car Licence

If you hold a standard driving licence (Category B), you can drive a motorhome or campervan with a MAM of 3,500kg or under. This covers a wide range of popular models, including most van conversions, compact coachbuilts and many entry-level motorhomes.

It’s worth noting, though, that MAM refers to the fully loaded weight, not just the vehicle on its own. Packing your motorhome heavily with passengers, water, luggage and equipment can push it over the 3,500kg limit, which would legally require a C1 licence to drive. Always check the figures before you set off.

Category C1: For Motorhomes Between 3,500kg and 7,500kg

If the MAM of your motorhome falls between 3,500kg and 7,500kg, you’ll need a Category C1 licence. Most motorhomes sold in the UK are 7,500kg or under, so if you do need an additional licence, it will likely be this one.

Larger coachbuilt motorhomes and many A-class models often sit in this weight bracket. If you’ve had your eye on a more spacious or luxurious model, it’s worth checking the MAM carefully before you commit.

Driving a motorhome that exceeds your licence entitlement is illegal and could invalidate your insurance. It’s not an area where it pays to make assumptions.

Category C: For the Largest Motorhomes Over 7,500kg

For vehicles exceeding 7,500kg, a full Category C licence is required. These larger vehicles are relatively uncommon in the private ownership market, but they do exist, particularly among American-style or expedition-spec motorhomes.

If you’re considering a vehicle in this category, you’ll need to factor in the additional training, testing and ongoing medical requirements that come with a Category C licence.

Did You Pass Your Test Before 1 January 1997?

If you passed your driving test before 1 January 1997, you’re in a fortunate position. Drivers who passed their test before this date are automatically entitled to drive motorhomes with a MAM of up to 7,500kg, because older licences include Category C1 entitlement as standard.

However, if you want to retain your C1 entitlement when you renew your licence, you’ll need to present a D4 medical report form completed by a doctor, along with a D2 application form. Once you reach age 70, this medical assessment must be repeated every three years.

If you’re in this group, it’s well worth checking the back of your driving licence to confirm exactly which categories are listed.

How to Get a C1 Licence

If you passed your test after 1 January 1997 and need a C1 to drive the motorhome you have in mind, the process is straightforward, if not particularly quick.

You’ll need to hold a valid Category B car licence and be over 18. You’ll also need to complete a D4 medical examination form assessed by a doctor, to confirm you meet the health standards required for driving this type of vehicle. Once that’s complete, you can apply for a provisional C1 licence using the DVLA’s D2 application form.

The theory element of the C1 test is more involved than the standard car theory test. It consists of 100 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 85, along with a hazard perception test and a case study element involving driving scenarios. The three theory tests currently cost £63 in total, and the practical test costs £115.

The practical test typically lasts around an hour and a half, assessing driving skills, safety awareness and vehicle handling. Once passed, you’ll receive your C1 licence from the DVLA within approximately two weeks.

What About Towing?

If you plan to tow a trailer behind your motorhome, there’s an additional layer to consider.

A Category C1 licence entitles you to tow a trailer up to 750kg. If you need to tow something heavier, you’ll require a Category C1E licence, which allows towing over 750kg, though the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer cannot exceed 12,000kg.

For most leisure uses, such as towing a small car or a dinghy, the standard C1 entitlement will cover you. But it’s always worth checking the combined weights before hitching anything up.
