How to Winterise Your Motorhome: A Complete Guide for UK Owners

As the colder months approach, many motorhome owners across the UK begin to prepare their vehicles for winter storage. Whether you’re planning to tuck your motorhome away until spring or use it less frequently during the off-season, winterising it properly is essential to protect your investment and ensure it’s ready to hit the road when the warmer weather returns.

At Pegasus Finance, we understand that your motorhome is more than just a vehicle – it’s your home-from-home, your escape, your adventure. That’s why we’ve put together this practical guide to help you prepare and protect it through the winter months.

1. Drain Down the Water System

One of the most important steps in winterising your motorhome is draining all water systems to prevent frozen pipes and costly damage.

Empty the fresh water tank, waste tank and water heater completely.

Open all taps (including the shower) and leave them open to allow air to circulate through the pipes.

Use a water pump to help flush any remaining water through the system.

Don’t forget to drain the toilet flush tank and cassette. A little antifreeze can be added to the toilet bowl (if manufacturer-approved) for added protection.

Top Tip: Blowing compressed air through the pipes can help remove any residual water.

2. Clean and Ventilate the Interior

A clean and well-ventilated motorhome is less likely to suffer from damp, mould or unwanted smells.

Give the interior a deep clean, including cupboards, kitchen appliances, and soft furnishings.

Remove bedding, clothing and any perishable items.

Leave cupboard doors, the fridge and freezer slightly ajar to prevent mould and allow airflow.

Consider using moisture traps or dehumidifiers to keep humidity at bay.

3. Check and Charge the Battery

Disconnect the leisure battery and store it in a warm, dry place if possible.

Use a trickle charger or battery maintainer to keep it charged.

Check the vehicle (starter) battery too – it may also benefit from an occasional top-up or a trickle charge.

4. Protect the Exterior

Winter weather can take its toll on your motorhome’s exterior. A little care now will go a long way.

Give the exterior a thorough wash, including the roof.

Apply a coat of wax or protective polish to shield against grime, salt and moisture.

Check for any damage to seals, vents or windows and make repairs where necessary.

Cover the vehicle with a breathable motorhome cover designed for winter storage. This helps prevent dirt build-up and UV damage while allowing moisture to escape.

5. Tyre Care

Tyres can become misshapen if left stationary for long periods.

Inflate tyres to the recommended pressure.

Move the vehicle slightly every few weeks to avoid flat spots.

If possible, use wheel blocks or jack the motorhome slightly off the ground to take pressure off the tyres.

6. Secure and Store Safely

Lastly, ensure your motorhome is safe and secure throughout the winter.

Choose a secure storage location – ideally one that is dry, level and protected from extreme weather.

Make sure all windows and roof lights are closed and locked.

Set alarms, immobilisers or steering locks if your vehicle is equipped with them.

Check your insurance policy to ensure you’re covered during the off-season.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

Taking the time to properly winterise your motorhome can save you time, money and stress when it’s time to get back on the road. It also helps extend the life of your vehicle and ensures it remains in top condition for your next adventure.
