Prepare Your Motorhome For Sale

Selling your motorhome privately can certainly save you money, but there are pitfalls to avoid.

The information provided here is simply sensible advice to maximise the selling potential and sale price of your motorhome.

Get the best price safely and securely.

If you are wishing to sell your motorhome, be sure you remain safe. Here are some simple but important facts you must consider before falling foul.

How to prepare your motorhome for sale

Whoever you end up selling your motorhome to there are some basic things you can do to make sure you that you sell quickly and for the highest price.

  1. Give the inside of your motorhome a thorough clean. This may sound obvious but so many people don’t make enough effort here, it may not be brand new but anyone spending their hand earned cash on your motorhome will be much more likely to buy and for the asking price if it looks like you have loved and cherished it. Give it a good hover and dust with some furniture polish which will also give it that just cleaned smell. If there are any marks or stains then get some cleaning products and do you best to remove them. Don’t forget to degrease the cooking area and give the washing facilities and toilet a good clean as well.
  2. Clean and polish the outside of your motorhome and touch up any stone chips or small scratches with a paint stick which you can obtain from somewhere like Halfords. If there are any larger areas that have been scratched it may be worth taking it to your local body shop for a quote. For a small job it may only cost you £200 whereas a potential buyer might assume it will cost them much more and want to knock you down on price. If you also search “mobile paint repair” you may also find that as a cheaper option you can find someone who will come to you to do the repair and generally these mobile paint technicians charge less. If you have any small parking dents you can also search for a local “paintless dent repair company” or ask your local car dealer who they use. For a small charge of about £50 per panel they can push out small dents meaning that you won’t have to visit the body shop and fork out £250 a panel to fill and paint it.
  3. Get a new MOT done if it runs out in the next six months. This is well worth while as it gives a prospective buyer confidence that there is not too much wrong mechanically with your motorhome and there are no large repair bills looming in the near future.
  4. Get a “Habitation check” done and get a certificate of safety. This is more important if you are selling privately as it will reassure a potential buyer of your motorhome that there is nothing wrong with the electrics, gas and washroom facilities.
  5. De-clutter your motorhome and remove your personal belongings. In exactly the same way that you would prepare your house for sale so that buyers can visualise themselves relaxing and enjoying their holidays in your motorhome.
  6. Check the oil and water levels and top up as necessary. Any motorhome buyer is very likely to check these things when looking at your motorhome and if they find the levels are low they will worry that there is a problem and probably won’t buy it. Also check the tyre pressures and that all the lights work.
  7. Dig out all the paperwork for the car including the V5 registration document, current and old mot certificates, manuals for all the appliances and accessories. Put them all in a nice folder with the spare key so you can present them to buyers which will also reassure them that you have been a loving, careful owner.

The Objective

The object of this exercise is to try to look at your motorhome with a critical eye as a potential buyer would to give yourself an idea of what you could do to improve your chances of a sale. Whether you end up selling to a dealer or a private buyer this will guarantee to sell your motorhome faster and add hundreds of pounds to the sale price so is well worth the effort.
