The 21st Century Camper: VW California Review

October 29, 2014

The classic VW Camper is the epitome of 1960s bohemia, still adored today after over 50 years as an enduring symbol of freedom, adventure and counterculture. Following the later launch of the VW Transporter, the VW California is the most recent incarnate of this historical vehicle and a welcome return to camper culture. With its clever and cost-effective combination of family transport and accommodation, it’s clear that the VW California offers all the status and style of the original VW Camper with a little extra sauce.

Motorhome Reviews: VW California California

The VW California Camper seats up to seven and has enough sleeping space for up to four people. Rated to two up to 2.5 tonnes VW have been careful to ensure that they combine the space and robustness of a commercial vehicle with the ride and handling of a standard road-goer.

The entry level into the California range is a 113bhp model known as the California Beach, and emits a delightfully eco-friendly 184g/km of CO2. At the top of the VW California range you’ll find the SE, with a 178bhp twin turbodiesel engine, four-wheel drive and a seven speed dual-clutch gearbox. All of the models are actually powered by the same engine though – a tough 2.0 litre TDi offering the assurance and comfort we’ve come to expect from the mighty VW.

Living in the VW California

Whichever VW California takes your fancy, the rear bench folds flat to create a spacious double bed for those sleeping on the ‘ground floor’. With an additional fold-out roof bed which you access through a hatch above the front seats, there’s room there for two kids or one large adult.

The VW California is exceptionally kitted-out and is the definition of on-the-road accommodation, with available upgrades including a parking heater, wardrobe, fridge, cooker and sink – making the VW California the ultimate home from home.

Driving the VW California

Handling-wise, the VW California’s ride is smooth and quiet, offering the atmosphere of a large estate car rather than a camper. With excellent grip and body control, you’ll feel secure on corners, no matter what you’re towing – and the VW California’s build is refined enough to minimise any noise from the fixtures and fittings which so often curse the camper.

Whatever your adventure, the VW California Camper is a dream purchase – available in a range of colours and offering a fantastic drive with a lot of history behind it. The VW California starts at £35,000, with the top-end California costing a cool £50,000 – but if that’s a little out of your budget, Pegasus Finance can help. We’re experts in VW Camper finance, and we’ll get your family inside the camper of your dreams without the hefty up-front payment. Try our online loan calculator today for an instant quote.
