Motorhome Reviews: the Swift Esprit 494

January 26, 2015

Last year, Cottingham-based Swift Motorhomes celebrated its fiftieth year – and this year, their popular range of Swift Esprit motorhomes has been given an update. The mid-market Swift range has received a new bodyshell, lower price tag and two new models – and in today’s review, we’re taking a look at the bigger of the two newbies: the Swift Esprit 494. A Fiat Ducati cab and a living space designed without any timber are among the greatest innovations added to this new Swift Esprit model, and there are more than a few updates on top of that. So let’s dive in – it’s time to take the Swift Esprit 494 out for a spin.

Just behind the cab is a kitchenette that can seat up to six, using the swivelling cab seats and the nearside sofa. The amidships kitchen is very well equipped, with a four hub duel fuel cooker, oven/grill unit and microwave oven providing all the options you’ll need for heating food. If that isn’t enough, though, the kitchen even boasts two 230V plug points for kitchen electronics. Both the cooker and the sink can be covered to create more work surfaces, but the flip-up counter at the side of the kitchen offers ample space for cooking.

The washroom includes separate areas for toilet and shower and the roof light makes for a very well lit space during the day. The wheel arch extends into the shower space, creating a place to put toiletries or a low seat – but it’s at the other end of the Esprit that we find the main attraction: a transverse island bed. A rarity in even the biggest motorhomes, this really is the pinnacle of motorhome luxury. No more awkward clambering over sleeping partners in the night, with both sides of the bed easy to get in and out of. And Swift Motorhomes went all the way with their double bed, even including a Duvalay Memory Foam mattress for a perfect night’s sleep. And parents, rejoice – a second double berth is available for families of four.

The standard Swift Esprit 494 comes with a manual 2300cc turbo diesel engine, but you can opt for the Lux Pack which will give you access to Fiat’s Comfort Matic automatic transmission. In the cab, several new features help with the driving performance. These include power steering and a gear-change indicator that offers a more economical drive. An optional reversing camera is also available, which is definitely useful for drivers not used to a motorhome of this length.

Starting at £47,895, the Swift Esprit 494 offers a lot more kit than it needs to for that price. Guaranteeing comfort, fantastic features and all the amenities of home, the Swift Esprit is a motorhome with a difference – and if you need some help finding the funds, Pegasus Finance can help.
