Motorhome Preview: Marco Polo Activity

January 14, 2015

The Mercedes Marco Polo Activity hits the UK mid 2015. Based on the Mercedes V-Class, this new ‘recreational vehicle’ is built by German converter Westfalia and is a lower spec version of the full Marco Polo, which will not be sold in the UK. The Activity will not have the full version’s kitchen and will instead be geared towards daytrips and short holidays – making this the ideal companion for a cheeky adventure.

So what are we waiting for? Let’s take a closer look at the Mercedes Marco Polo Activity.

On the outside, the Activity looks like the standard Mercedes Vito. With its 5m length and 1.98m height, the motorhome will be able to fit in all standard car parks and garages – requiring no more spending on parking than a regular car. As mentioned before, the Activity will not feature a washroom or a kitchen, instead using its space for full length berths, room for gear and seating for all passengers. The interior looks great, but not at the cost of convenience. All panelling can easily withstand a few bumps and scratches and the black leather seating won’t stain quickly.

This Mercedes motorhome is aimed at short, activity centred trips. The interior has plenty of space for big recreational gear, such as surfboards or bikes, and the drawer under the central bedding provides even more space for organising clutter. The pop-up roof provides room for a two person berth and the central bed can easily sleep three, meaning the Marco Polo Activity  comfortably accommodates five. When not in use, the top berth can slide out of the way, creating more headroom in the central area – and if you’re not using the central area for sleeping or storing gear, a foldout table provides seating for five.  Five 12-volt power outlets offer sufficient power for your electronics, creating a comfortable space to spend cold nights and rainy days.

The Mercedes Marco Polo Activity offers a choice between two four cylinder diesel engines with several output options. The 1.6-litre engine provides 88bhp or a turbocharged 114bhp – with the turbo returning a satisfying 44.1miles to the gallon. The 2.1-litre engine has a two stage turbo with rear wheel drive and comes in either 136bhp, 163bhp or 190bhp. The Activity will feature Crosswind Assist and Attention Assist in its standard kit and will most likely include optional features like Active Parking Assist and Lane Keeping Assist.

If you’ve got a taste for adventure, be it para-gliding, biking or fishing, the Mercedes Marco Polo could be the motorhome for you. It sleeps five comfortably and offers a ton of space ideal for spending the evening in.
