Lee Pearson leads out the Great Britain Paralympic team in Rio

The opening ceremony of the Paralympics kicked off last night in the stunning Maracana Stadium. The games opened with a vibrant ceremony, on Brazil’s Independence Day just two and a half week after the closing of the Olympics. Along the central theme of ‘Everybody has a heart’ the president of the International Paralympic Committee Philip Craven made an inspiring speech to a stadium full of supporters and 4,350 athletes from 160 nations.

Arriving to beat the medals taken home at the London Olympics, the GB Paralympic team are set to win 121 medals over the next 11 days. The ten times equestrian gold medallist carried the flag for the Great Britain team. Lee Pearson was nominated by over 250 fellow athletes and commented that he was’ proud and honoured to be the flag bearer’.

Today kicks off the first day of the Paralympics with a mix of disciplines including; shooting, athletics, cycling, swimming, judo and power lifting. The equestrian will be commencing on Tuesday 13th.
