March 11, 2013

Global Champions Tour showjumping eventThis summer, London will host Britain’s first Global Champions Tour showjumping event.
Kensington Gardens in central London will stage the event from June 6-9th, pitting the worlds top riders contesting showjumping’s richest series.

London is part of 13 events on this year’s GCT, with Shanghai also announced by organisers as a debut city for the tour.

Member of Great Britain’s Olympic gold medal-winning team, Nick Skelton, welcomes the event saying, “We need something like this for England. We don’t have many international competitions and after the Olympic Games we had a lot of support and publicity, so to bring the Global Champions Tour to London is a great idea.”

“It should attract a lot of people and spectators. I will definitely be there.”

The Global Champions Tour begins in Madrid in early May, with other confirmed venues including Hamburg, Cannes, Chantilly, Monte Carlo, Lausanne and Vienna. The grand final being held in Qatar at Doha’s Al Shaqab Equestrian Centre from November 21-23.

GCT founder and president Jan Tops said: “The 2013 season looks set to be a true classic for our sport, with great new venues in London, Doha, Shanghai and Madrid.

“At GCT, we have always tried to break new ground and raise the profile of showjumping and equestrian sport in general.

“We want to bring our sport to more and more people in new parts of the world, and it gives me real pleasure to see this becoming reality as we enter the new season.”
