Global Champions Tour Event To Go Ahead

April 4, 2013

The inaugural Global Champions Tour event to be held in London looks set to go ahead after initial upset.

The richest show jumping event ever held in the UK will now take place at Stratford, on the International Quarter adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from June 6-9.

The Queen’s grandson, Peter Phillips, says there are “statutory processes” still to be respected in the short time-frame remaining. But if it goes ahead, GCT will be one of the first international sports events staged in the Olympic Park since the Games, and the richest jumping show ever held in the UK, with a prize-fund of €750,000 (£636,000).

The Royal Parks, who administer Kensington Gardens, received a similar launch proposal a couple of months ago but this application was slammed by Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea planners, with 300 objections from residents who feared a lengthy public lockout.

Phillips says the Mayor’s office assisted in last week’s negotiations with Stratford.

Iain Graham, chief executive of British Showjumping, praised Phillips’s determination to save the show just two weeks after the Kensington setback. He said: “We applaud the commitment and proactivity Peter and his team have shown in identifying such a prestigious venue, which can only serve to reignite the enthusiasm the nation embraced us with when we won team gold.”
