June 29, 2015

England’s largest county, Yorkshire, brings to mind visions of rolling green countryside, idyllic farmland and warm and friendly locals. And if you’ve ever been, you’ll know it delivers on all of those – and then some! Dominating the North and nearly spanning the entire width of the country, unsurprisingly, Yorkshire has something for everyone – making it the ideal destination for your next UK staycation this summer.

From its vast green spaces, such as the stunning Yorkshire Dales, to its thriving cosmopolitan cities, Yorkshire is an incredibly diverse county. However, it’s the region’s stunning countryside that draws outdoor enthusiasts from around the UK to a breath of fresh air and a relaxing summer break. We’re bringing you some of the area’s top activities, ideal for keeping the kids entertained on your next caravan or motorhome tour of this magical county – just in time for the school holidays.

Sightseeing & Activities in Yorkshire

With three National Parks (The Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and Peak District) all within its boundaries, it’s no shocker that Yorkshire boasts some of the best countryside the UK has to offer. A nature enthusiast’s paradise, the Yorkshire Dales in particular offer miles of walking routes and outdoor activities suitable for the whole family. Although most camping and caravanning holidays are all about escaping the city life, if you fancy taking in some of the county’s more cosmopolitan sites, the historic city of York and buzzing Northern capital of Leeds are easily accessible by road or rail. However, if a walk through Yorkshire’s moorland or a daytrip to the city aren’t enough to keep you occupied, we’ve got some additional activities lined up. Check out our three suggestions below, ideal for keeping the kids (and parents!) occupied – these are essential stops on your next Yorkshire staycation.

EUREKA!: the National Children’s Museum

While the relaxing Yorkshire Dales can provide respite for adults on a break, if you’re on a staycation with young children, it won’t be long before they’re pining for some activity. EUREKA!, situated in Halifax, is a short drive from the southern Dales and makes a perfect family day trip for the kids. As the premiere children’s museum in the UK, this charity-run venture is jam-packed with educational and interactive exhibits ‘where children play to learn and grown-ups learn to play’ – making an essential day out for young families visiting the area. Don’t forget to check out EUREKA!’s list of activities and themed days running throughout summer – click here to find out more.

Visitors are encouraged to get lost in the stunning garden setting and navigate their way around its maze-like layout. Booking is essential if you’re planning a visit – click here to find out more.

Harewood House

Completed in 1771, the striking Harewood House makes other country homes and estates pale by comparison. Start your day by exploring the house’s many historic staterooms, before heading downstairs to see what life was like for Harewood’s many servants and staff. Next, head out into its enormous landscaped gardens – with over 100 acres of grounds to explore, it’s the perfect photo opportunity. And before you think it’s just for the grown ups, think again! Harewood House has an on-site adventure playground where the young ones can burn off energy and make new friends. And that’s not all – Harewood boasts a family friendly bird garden with flamingos, parrots and even penguins! We recommend booking in advance during the peak summer period, with tickets giving you access to the house, gardens and bird garden. Click here to find out more.
